Lemmy was born deaf for unknown reasons. We don’t know exactly how old he is but he is an older boy compared to other children who would just be starting school as he is. Without schooling he has no way of communicating outside of simple gestures in addition to having no ability to read or write. His father tries to earn some money by tapping trees for palm wine. This is actually part of the problem. The father is known to be an alcoholic and is the only care taker of this boy since the mother left. Lemmy often goes without proper nutrition and has had no education. He has been ignored for a very long time.
